Black-shouldered Kite (elanus caeruleus) :

Local Name is Kapassi.   Its size is equivalent to House Crow (33cm). Features are dainty hawk, ashy grey above, white below with a black line above the eyes and black patches on shoulder. Found throughout India. Its food is mice, lizards, crickets, locusts etc.

Crested Hawk Eagle (Spizaetus cirrhatus)

It is a medium sized (60-75cm) raptor. They seems brown from above and white from undersides. They eat mammals, birds and reptiles. They are found in India, Sri lanka, Indonesia, Philippines etc. They lay single egg at a time.  Their nesting season is from December to April. They make their nests using sticks.

Crested Serpent Eagle (Spilornis cheela)

Local name: Furj baaz. Crested Serpent Eagle is a medium sized blackish eagle appears stocky. Its head is big, with yellow circle around eyes & legs. Their nesting season is from December to March. Lay single egg at a time. Can be seen throughout India in forested areas. It is a specialist reptile eater and can be seen close to water sources.

Indian Pitta (Pitta brachyura)

Pitta is a equivalent to size (19cm) of Myna. It is a stub-tailed thrush-like bird, green, blue, fulvous, black and white with crimson abdomen and under tail. It can been seen India, Sri lanka, Parkistan & Bangladesh. Their nesting season is May to August. It lays 4-6 eggs at atime. One can find this bird in Kanha forest.

Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea)

Local Name: Lal anjan. It is a large bird of 80-90 cm tall and 120-155cm wide with wingspan. Its body weight is approx. 0.5-1.5kg. It is bluish grey above with rufous head and neck black & chestnut below. They are locally migratory birds. Their favorite food is frog, fish & snakes. They lays 3-5 eggs at a time. They are normally seen in swamp and marshy areas.

Pond Heron or Paddy Bird (Ardeola grayii)

Indian Pond Heron is very commonly seen in rural locations of India. It is a small sized bird and popularly known by the name of Bagla in Indian society. As they are mostly seen in muddy and marshy area they get the name Pond Heron. Their common food is insects, fish, tadpoles etc. Their breeding season is prior to Monsoon and lays 3-5 eggs at a time.

White-necked strok (Ciconia episcopus)

Often known by the name of Woolly necked stroke is 85cm in height. They can be seen in Central India forest like Bandhavgarh, Kanha. It lays 2-5 eggs at a time. It basic body color is black with white neck and eye-circle. It s favorite food is insects, small reptiles, amphibians.

Common Teal (Anas crecca)

Local name is Choti Murghabi. Its size is equivalent to domestic duck with size ranging between 34-44 cms. Its average weight is 350 gms. Their nesting season is April to May. At a time they lay 7-10 eggs of cream colour. Male is penciled grayish, with chestnut head and a broad metallic green band running backward from eye to nape, bordered above & below with white lines.

Shikra (Accipiter badius)

Shikra is a small raptor bird with 26-32 cm long. It is bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. It is a lightly built hawk, ashy blue-grey above, white below cross-barred with rusty brown. They are spread over all over India upto 1300mtr. In himalaya. Its food includes lizards, mice, squirrel, birds etc. They usually flies close to ground. They lays about 3 to 4 eggs at a time.

White-eyed buzzard (Butastur teesa)

Its local name is Tisa in Hindi. It is a small grayish brown hawk with white throat, two dark cheek stripes, brown and white underparts, and orange-yellow cere. Its is easily identifiable by its white iris to the eye. Their usual habitat is in dry open forest or farms. Their favorite food is grasshoppers, locusts, crickets and other large insects. Breeding season is from February to May and lays 3 eggs at a time of greenish white colour. Here female alone incubates.

Pied Harrier (Circus melanoleucos)

Its local hindi name is Pahatai. It is a asian species of carnivores bird with length 45-47cm and wing span is 112-116cm. This harrier is a slim and elegant long-winged raptor of contrasting black & white plumage. Its breeding season is from April to July.  Pied Harrier lays 4- 6 eggs at a time.

Its Indian name is Gidh. It is a heavy, dirty blackish brown vulture with scrawny, naked head and neck. Its size is 94 cm long and 217cm wingspan. Its breeding season is from October to March and lays single egg at a time. They can be seen in countryside sites. But slowly, they are disappearing from scene. In Kanha Forest we can find them.

Red Junglefowl (gallus gallus)

Its Indian name is Junglee Murga. Its size is equivalent to domestic hen. Its food is insects, grains, shoots, berries, termites etc. Their breeding season is from March to May and lay 5-6 eggs at a time. They can easily be seen in Central India forests. They lives in shallow scrape in dense undergrowth, lined with dry leaves.

Common Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) Its Indian name is Mor/Manjur. Its size is equivalent to size of vulture. Young Peafowl can be from 1 – 1.5mtr. long. Its food is insects, lizards, grains, small snakes etc. Breeding season is from January to October. Feathers of mail, when spreads, seem very beautiful. It is a national bird of India and can be easily seen in Kanha National Park forest.

Bronzewinged Jacana (Metopidius indicus)

It is a jacana. They are easily identifiable by their huge claws & feet and can be seen in marshy areas. India is their favorite breeding area. Average length of Jacana is 28cms long. Here females are larger than male. Their dominating colour is black dark brown inner wings. They feeds on insects and other invertebrates.

Redwattled Lapwing (Vanellus indicus)

Its Indian name is titeer. It is about 35 cm long bird with light brown with purple sheen, reddish beak, yellow legs, black head & neck with lining of white colour. They usually feed at night and are active in moon light. It is noisy by nature. Their breeding season is from March to August and lays 3-4 eggs at a time. Here both male & female incubate eggs.

Common green Pigeon (Treron phoenicoptera)

Also known as Yellow-legged Green Pigeon. Its Indian name is Harial. Its size is equivalent of Pigeon. Its appearance is stocky yellow, olive-green and ashy grey pigeon with patch on shoulders, whitish wings and conspicuous yellow. Both sexes are alike. They feed fruits and berries. Breeding season is from March to June and lays 2 eggs at a time.
